I had a second surgery 36 years later ( mechanical mitral valve and repair to the tricuspid valve. When I had my first surgery the field was fairly new and technology was not what it is today. I have surprised doctors my whole life. I went on to graduate from college with 2 BS degrees in Education, and have 3 healthy, happy children. I decided as soon as I was old enough that my heart disease would not dictate my life or stand in my way of accomplishing my goals in life. A positive attitude will go a long way. I also have tetrology of fallott!!! I have only had two surgeries though, one when I was 7 tears old, and one when I was 35 years old to replace my aortic valve. It was a breeze for me. I know when they're poking around in there it can be a bit intimidating but doctors are pretty good at what they do. Trusting them makes it a lot easier. Anyway, once you've gone through all of this stuff, life is going to be easier. You'll have gone through so much more pressure and testing than most everyone else you know so life's pressures will seem easier to you than most other people. I had open heart surgery 1 year ago (at age 40, I'm a single mom with a 19 year old daughter) and one of my grafts failed last week and I had 2 stents placed, then I did the Seattle heartwalk yesterday. I did the walk for all of us dealing with and living through and in spite of heart disease. I will pray for you as you get through your infection and as you prepare for your 6th bypass. I can only imagine as i faced a possible 2nd bypass last week, but it was not needed. But I know God only gives us what He knows we can handle for His glory. He never told us it would be easy, only that He would be with us and bless us. Our job is to trust Him. My heart was damaged by radiation for cancer I had in my mid-20s--snuck back up on me with a heart attack at 50, and two mechanical valve replacements, a double bypass and a hole in my heart patched two years later. My 5 year old was in for an MRI (under general anesthesia) and has had 2 minor surgeries & several other procedures related to his intestinal function -- or lack thereof. We're still at the stage of trying to figure it out. While I was sitting there trying to stare at the TV but crying a little bit anyway (it's hard to watch your baby go 'under', and go limp like that), I looked around the room & saw another group - the parents came out right after we did & the mom was crying too. I too have been through heart surgery both as a child and an adult. In 1966, 1973 and 1999 - so been there, done that and got the T-shirt to cover the scars. I have a 12 year old son, and so it is like I can relate to you on both accounts of going through heart surgery but knowing how a teenager wants to be out and about enjoying the summer. So, we have decided that everytime we go out and do something special for summer this year, that we will remember what you are going through and send you lots of love across the big pond. His second was this past January when doctors put in an AP window. They are trying to encourage growth of the very small pulmonary arteries. One side is growing but the other is not. No repair until they grow big enough. Next update will be in September when they decide what to do next. I also have a 7 year old boy, Rylan, and a 2 year old daughter, Cierah. This is my first encounter with ACHA. I am 66 and born with TOF. I had my first surgery (Taussig-Blalock) by Dr Longmire at Johns Hopkins in Aug 1946. The surgery was quite successful after a few tedious days. I had the full corrective procedure in 1964 in Oklahoma city. I was left with a small shunt. As long as I followed my limits, I could do about anything I wanted. Finished college in 1963, went to PERU to get married in 1967, finished grad school in 1969, and just retired from a carrer with USAF civil service. I have four children (2 and 2) and 5.5 grandchildren. One grandson was born with hypoplastic left heart syndrone. He has had two open-hearts and will most certainly need another when he gets older (he will be 2 years old next month). I had my first indication of new problems in 1999. Apparently I had two episodes (undiagnosed) of A-Fib Norpace was stopped and I received an AICD implant for my X-mas present in 2001. He had surgery when he was 11 days old for the repair, and they put a conduit in place of a pulmonary valve. Luckily, they don't expect to have to replace the conduit with a valve until his late teens. He's doing great so far! The cath lab may be in his near future for some stenosis, but otherwise doing wonderfully. His DiGeorge syndrome often remains as our primary focus. Our thoughts and prayers are with you! Our son Luke (20) has a similar condition to TOF, he has a DORV, (double outlet right ventricle, pulmonary stenosis and a vsd). Luke has had 4 open heart operations and 3 catheters. His last surgery was a few months ago when he had his pulmonary valve replaced. His girlfriends father also had his valve replaced and a quad bypass done the week before with the same surgeon and same hospital. Being young you pounce back so much quicker as I saw when Luke and Alan had their surgeries. With all the new technology they have come along way in open heart surgery. All the best from downunder. You have a very nice page. I too was born with CHD and can recall quite well being your age. Judging by the pictures you like to fish. I spent most of my time as a young man doing the same. I have had OHS x2. I did not have surgery as a child because very few OHS were done on babies when I was born so I ended up waiting quite some time until my first OHS. I had my first when I was 16 and my most recent in 2002. I have made the most of my new pulmonary valve by training to do Sprint Triathlons where you swim 0.5 miles, bike 15 miles and run 3.5 miles. I wear my heart rate monitor to let me know just how fast I can go and have yet to finish last. In gym class growing up that was never the case.
